The Hopewell Valley Arts Council sponsored “Out of the Ashes: Art Emerging from Fallen Trees,” or ”ArtSpires.” Briefly, ash trees are being destroyed by the emerald ash borer. Many are being cut down proactively to protect people and property. The Arts Council had some of them cut into 5 x 5 inch by 6 foot or 8 x 8 inch by 8 foot timbers which were then decorated by members of the community. There were also some larger chunks available for chain saw art!
On September 20, there was a virtual ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the “planting” of the first 11 spires. Roughly 65 spires will eventually appear somewhere in the Hopewell Valley. Below are my photos of the spires. I decided to leave them in the order the photos were taken (more of a story that way!).
Candace and I contributed a spire and documented its construction in a photo album.
