Pacific Northwest Trip, June 20-30, 2019

Candace and Ed made a trip to the Pacific Northwest in June. We flew in to SeaTac on Thursday, the 20th, rented a car and drove to Edmonds, Washington to visit Paul and Barbara. Paul was a postdoc in the Gravity Group when I was a beginning grad student. In fact, Jane and I watched the first moon landing at his house in Princeton. The flight was delayed, but Paul and Barbara kept dinner warm for us.

After several days with Paul and Barbara, we visited my brother Rick and Julie to celebrate his 70-1/2 birthday on Tuesday, the 25th. It’s a long tradition that he celebrates birthdays on the half rather than the whole on Christmas. Joining us in Covington, Washington were Julie’s daughter Robin, sister Barbara, and my children, Jeff and Amy.

The next stop was to see Bill and Sue in Corvalis, Oregon. Bill was a fellow grad student in the Gravity Group and Bill and Sue and Jane and I were quite close in those days, even taking a Hawaiian vacation together as part of attending an Astronomical Society meeting in Honolulu. (Yes we did present papers!)

In between my brother’s and Bill and Sue’s we managed a side trip to see Mount St. Helens.

On Saturday, the 29th, we left Bill and Sue, drove back to SeaTac and checked into an airport hotel, so we could catch an early flight on the 30th. The return flight was delayed too.
